KMX Technologies, a global leader in membrane distillation and advanced water treatment, today announced the launch of an advanced data center water reuse application for its proprietary Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VMD) technology.

The solution is designed to significantly reduce freshwater use and wastewater volumes at liquid-cooled data centers, helping operators meet increasingly stringent requirements.

KMX’s VMD platform separates high-purity water from challenging brines and waste streams at low temperature and pressure, enabling high water recovery and a minimized waste concentrate.

When applied to data center cooling tower blowdown water, KMX’s technology converts what was previously a disposal stream into a reusable water source for cooling or other onsite data center needs.

“AI and high-density compute are driving a step-change in water demand at data centers at the same time communities and regulators are demanding stronger water stewardship,” said Zachary Sadow, Chairman & CEO of KMX Technologies. “By applying our VMD technology to cooling tower blowdown, we enable data center developers and operators to recycle more water, reduce net withdrawals, and de-risk projects in water-stressed regions.”

Purpose-built for Cooling Tower Blowdown

Cooling tower blowdown at liquid-cooled data centers is characterized by elevated dissolved solids, scaling constituents, and treatment chemicals, making it difficult and expensive to reuse. KMX’s VMD system is engineered to handle these complex chemistries while producing:

  • High-quality distillate suitable for return to the cooling system or other onsite uses
  • A small-volume, concentrated brine that simplifies downstream management and can support zero-liquid discharge strategies

Accelerating Greenfield Data Center Approvals

Water supply, discharge permits, and community concerns around water stress are increasingly gating factors for new data center projects. KMX’s VMD solution helps unlock greenfield development by:

  • Improving projected water metrics – Reduces net freshwater withdrawals and total discharge volumes.
  • Supporting resilient siting – Enables projects in regions where water is limited or where regulators require advanced reuse and minimization of effluent.
  • Enhancing community acceptance – Demonstrates a tangible commitment to local water stewardship with on-site reuse and minimized impact on municipal systems.

Enabling Brownfield Retrofits

For existing liquid-cooled data centers, KMX’s VMD units are designed as plug-in retrofits to existing cooling water infrastructure:

  • Modular and scalable – Skid or containerized units can be installed in phases, matching growth in IT load or evolving corporate water targets.
  • Minimal disruption – Tie-ins are made at the cooling tower blowdown stream, allowing retrofits without major re-plumbing or extended downtime.
